BRAKES HAMPER MILLER AT MID-OHIO

LEXINGTON, Ohio – Vinnie Miller parked his JD Motorsports with Gary Keller Chevrolet after only 14 laps and finished 36th Saturday in the Rock N Roll Tequila 170 Xfinity Series race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

A left front brake piston issue sent Miller to the garage.

“It’s not the redemption weekend we hoped for or had planned,” Miller said. “One of the left front brake pistons lost an O-ring, and all the fluid leaked out. Nothing we could do in the garage area to fix it. We will move on to Bristol and hope for a better week.

“Thank you JAS Expedited Trucking, Bryan (Berry) and all these guys on the JD Motorsports with Gary Keller team for all they do.

Miller is 26th in Xfinity points.

Justin Allgaier won the race.

The series races next at tough Bristol Motor Speedway Aug. 17.

Smithley, driving the No. 0 Chevrolet for JD Motorsports with Gary Keller, said he ran well most of the day but struggled with an electrical problem over the closing laps.

“We actually had some fun at Mid-Ohio today,” he said. “Raced hard all day and got into the top 20. Had some  electrical issue in the last 20 laps but salvaged 28th. It was definitely the most fun road-course race I’ve had.”

Smithley stayed 20th in Xfinity points.

Justin Allgaier won the race.

The series races next at tough Bristol Motor Speedway Aug. 17.

MILLER READY FOR MID-OHIO

LEXINGTON, Ohio – It’s Road Course Round Two for Vinnie Miller this week.

Miller made his Xfinity Series road-course debut for JD Motorsports with Gary Keller last week. He hits the road again Saturday in the Rock N Roll Tequila 170 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course after finishing 35th at Watkins Glen International.

“After an unfortunate ending to the weekend at Watkins Glen, I’m excited to go to Mid-Ohio,” Miller said. “The track seems a little more technical, with not as much elevation change. From what I’ve been learning on iRacing, it sort of reminds me of the road course I was on at Bondurant Racing School.

“I can’t thank the No. 01 JD Motorsports with Gary Keller team enough for working so hard to get a road course car ready for me this week.”

Miller is 25th in Xfinity Series points entering the weekend.

Practice is scheduled at Mid-Ohio at 1:35 and 4:05 p.m. Friday. Qualifying is set for 11:30 a.m. Saturday, with the race to follow at 3 p.m.

CHASTAIN 20th IN THE RAIN AT THE GLEN

CHASTAIN 20th IN THE RAIN AT THE GLEN

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – On one of the most difficult race days of the season, Ross Chastain finished 20th Saturday in the JD Motorsports with Gary Keller No. 4 Chevrolet in the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International.

Importantly, Chastain stayed 12th in series points and remains solidly in the hunt for a playoff position with six races left in the regular season.

Chastain stayed on the lead lap and raced with the fast cars despite a heavy dose of rain that changed racing conditions dramatically.

“As if road-course racing wasn’t tough enough, the rain made it an even bigger day,” Chastain said with a smile. “At times, I could barely see where I was headed because of the spray from other cars. But we had a pretty good run.”

Joey Logano won the race.

The Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course hosts the next Xfinity race Aug. 11.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – In his third race at Watkins Glen International, Garrett Smithley drove a steady pace and came home 23rd in Saturday’s Zippo 200 Xfinity Series race.

The 200 was the first of three road-course races the series is scheduled to run this month.

Smithley, driving the JD Motorsports with Gary Keller No. 0 Chevrolet, finished on the lead lap on a tough day – rain pelted the course and changed conditions dramatically – and stayed 20th in series points.

“It’s not often that we drive these cars on rain tires,” Smithley said. “Quite a different experience. But we hung in there and brought it home in one piece with a decent finish. A great job by the guys.”

Joey Logano won the race.

The series moves on to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for an Aug. 11 race.

RAIN FALLS ON MILLER AT THE GLEN

RAIN FALLS ON MILLER AT THE GLEN

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Vinnie Miller’s first Xfinity Series race at the Watkins Glen International road course was made even tougher by the weather.

Rain fell on the course, creating an entirely new dynamic for drivers in Saturday’s Zippo 200. Miller drove the No. 01 Chevrolet for JD Motorsports with Gary Keller.

The race ended early for Miller, who lost brakes on lap 32 and slammed into a tire barrier in the first turn.

Miller is 25th in Xfinity Series points.

Joey Logano won the race.

The series rolls on to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for an Aug. 11 race.

Katherine Legge To Make NASCAR Debut at Mid-Ohio; Two-Race Program with JD Motorsports Includes Road America

Katherine Legge To Make NASCAR Debut at Mid-Ohio; Two-Race Program with JD Motorsports Includes Road America

ATLANTA, Ga. (August 2, 2018) – In the latest addition to an incredibly diverse career, Katherine Legge will make her NASCAR Xfinity Series debut this month at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, driving the #15 JD Motorsports with Gary Keller Chevrolet Camaro.  Primary support for Legge’s NASCAR effort, which will include the Xfinity race at Road America, comes from Airtec, a Maryland-based aviation and technology integration company.

“To say that I’m looking forward to making my NASCAR debut in the Xfinity Series would be a massive understatement, and I can’t thank Steve and Eileen Bildman at Airtec enough for helping to provide me with this opportunity,” Legge said.  “Racing a stock car will be a massive adjustment for me from the types of cars I usually race, even on road courses, but I’m eager to take on the challenge.  Thanks to Johnny Davis, Gary Keller, and everyone at JD Motorsports for all their hard work to make this happen.”

A native of Guildford, England, who now makes her home in Atlanta, Legge currently competes for Meyer Shank Racing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, racing an Acura NSX GT3, and was recently announced as the first driver for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing in the new Jaguar I-PACE eTrophy Series, a part of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship and the first to be based off of a street-legal production battery electric vehicles.

Driving the #86 MSR Acura in IMSA endurance road races, Legge has scored one victory and three additional podium finishes in seven races this season, and is currently ranked second in the GTD Drivers’ Championship.  In 2017, the first year for the Acura program, Legge and co-driver Andy Lally scored the first two victories worldwide for the new NSX GT3, at Detroit and Watkins Glen International Raceway.

Owner of JD Motorsports, Johnny Davis said “I am very excited to work with this young lady. She has a very impressive background and we are glad to assist in her growth over to NASCAR and introduce her to the stock car racing world.”

Founded by Johnny Davis in 1983, JD Motorsports with Gary Keller fields four full-season Chevrolets in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, with the No. 4 driven by Ross Chastain, No. 01 driven by Vinnie Miller, No. 0 driven by Garrett Smithley and the No. 15, which will be piloted by Legge at the Rock N Roll Tequila 170 Presented by Amethyst Beverage at Mid-Ohio on August 11; and at the Johnsonville 180 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, on August 25.

JDM has seen a steady rise in on-track performance in the past few years, including five top-10 results for driver Landon Cassill in 2013-15, five Top 10s for the team in the 2016-2017 season, and a recent fourth-place finish for Chastain at Iowa Speedway.  JDM is now the top-ranked non-Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series team in the Xfinity Series.

“Making my Xfinity Series debut will be a huge challenge.  These cars are very different from what I’m used to driving in open-wheel and sports car racing, but I’ve built my career on diversity and going where opportunities take me,” Legge said.  “I hope to learn as much as I can at Mid-Ohio, and then apply that knowledge a couple of weeks later at Road America.”

Legge’s diverse resume includes experience in Formula 3, Formula Renault, a Formula One test, Champ Car, Indy car, A1GP, DTM, Formula E and IMSA endurance sports car racing.  She was the first woman to win pole in a Formula Zetec category in her native England in 2000, and one year later won the British Racing Driver Club’s prestigious “Rising Star” award.  In November 2005, she became the first woman to test a Formula One car since Sarah Fisher in 2002.

She competed in the Toyota Atlantic Championship in 2005, winning the series opener in Long Beach to become the first woman to win a major open wheel race in North America. Two more race wins and five podiums in 2005 saw Legge finish third in the championship. She moved up to PKV Racing in Champ Car in 2006 and became the first woman to lead a race in that series, at The Milwaukee Mile.  She competed for Dale Coyne Racing in 2007 and matched her best series finish of sixth at Long Beach and earned her best Indy car start of eighth, twice, before returning to Europe to compete in the DTM touring car series from 2008-2010 where she was an Audi factory driver.

Legge returned to North America and joined Dragon Racing’s IndyCar Series team in 2012, but a short-lived Lotus engine program led to the team to cut back to a single, Chevrolet-powered entry for two drivers, with Legge only competing on oval tracks.  She moved to the Delta Wing sports car program from 2013-2015 – becoming the first woman to lead an American Le Mans Series race at Road America, and the first woman to lead the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 2016.  She also competed in two Formula E races with Amlin Aguri in the 2014/2015 season.  Legge has been with Meyer Shank Racing since 2017 and has earned three wins and seven podium finishes over the two seasons to date in her Acura.

Chastain Racing Towards Playoffs

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – With seven races left in the regular season, Ross Chastain has his eye on the playoffs.

Chastain, driving the No. 4 Chevrolet for JD Motorsports with Gary Keller, sits 12th in Xfinity points and, if the regular season ended today, would be the 12th and final driver to qualify for the playoffs and a shot at the seasonal championship. He is 40 points above the cutoff line.

Chastain will be protecting that spot in Saturday’s Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International as the Xfinity Series opens a month in which its drivers will compete on three road courses.

Chastain has raced three times in Xfinity events at the Glen, a fast 2.45-mile course with seven turns.

“The Glen is really fast for a road course,” Chastain said. “It gets your attention in a hurry. But I’ve been there enough now to have a good idea how to drive the place. We’re looking to finish well again this week.”

Chastain finished fourth – his best run of the season – last week at Iowa Speedway.

Practice for the 82-lap race is scheduled at 12:35 p.m. and 2:05 p.m. Friday. Qualifying is set for 11:35 a.m. Saturday, with the race to follow at 3 p.m.
